Glastron History

It was 1956. It was the middle of the American Century. Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House and the post-World War II economy was booming. In Austin, Texas four men decided to start a company devoted to building boats with a new product called fiberglass.

Why not? Chevrolet has introduced the fiberglass-bodied Corvette three years earlier and America had raved. Out in California, a handful of companies were already starting to make boats out of the amazing new material. The four Texans included a boat designer, a boat dealer, an industrial adhesives salesman and a casket manufacture— a strange-enough collection of talents and skill sets.

It was the era of Rockola jukeboxes and tailfins. Everywhere you looked, American design was stunning the world. At the newly-formed Glastron Boat Company, the goals were to produce stunningly-designed, feature-rich, affordable family boats. The combination resonated with customers. And in less than five years Glastron became the national leader in fiberglass boat building.

American popular culture, design and style continued to evolve and so did Glastron. From the first deep-vee hulls and stern drive propulsion in the ’60s, to the audacious colors and fashion-inspired designs of the ’70s, Glastron came of age and the world stood up and took notice. The ’80s and ’90s saw the Glastron product lineup expand and the Glastron name become even better known worldwide.

Fifty-Five years after the first prototype, Glastron has built nearly half a million boats. They’ve also built a history rich with great styling and countless manufacturing innovations. From that start in the ’50s to the new millennium, Glastron has come of age with family boating—and created generations of Glastron owners around the world in the process.
